Graf Wittekind visitors’ mine

The Ruhr District (or "Ruhrpott" in the vernacular) is famous first and foremost for its heavy industry – coal mining, iron and steel. The Graf Wittekind visitors’ mine is a former coal mine. Three coal pits were in operation one after the other between 1582 and 1900.
Take your team on a mining journey through time. You will come across a number of relics that hark back to the Ruhr District’s past as a centre of heavy industry. Since 1986, many volunteers have worked tirelessly to make some of the shafts accessible to the general public. Built at the same time, the Syburger Coalmining Trail leads past six different shafts, of which three are again accessible. Information panels tell you all about the geology and the history of the old coalmining area, which has now been placed under heritage protection.
Come along on a trip to the mine to get a glimpse into a typical, gruelling day’s work in the life of a coalminer.
